Kelvingrove New Century Project
Date Added: Thu 21 June 2007
With record numbers of visitors attending the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum since it’s re-opening, we take a look back at one of the biggest projects that B&S Graphics have been involved with to date.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum has long been a favourite with the people of Glasgow and surrounding areas. Prior to closure for refurbishment, Kelvingrove’s annual total of one million visits made it in absolute terms the most visited museum in Scotland and the sixth most visited museum in Britain.
The restoration of the building and the radical redisplay of objects was given the working title of Kelvingrove New Century Project (KGNCP) and funding of £27.9 million was raised to complete the project. This created thousands of square metres of new display space and increased the number of objects on display by 50%.
Working directly with Glasgow Museums, we supplied all display graphics for the museum. This included interpretative panels, specialist floor vinyl, printed digital canvas and duratrans used in the backlit displays. We also supplied and installed the display plaques for the Donor and In Memorium Walls in the centre hall which features almost 9,000 names of people from all over the world who contributed to the public appeal.
We were delighted to be involved with such a high-profile project and it was a real team effort by everyone involved at B&S.
Our efforts were also recognised by Lord MacFarlane of Bearsden, KT – Chairman of the Kelvingrove Refurbishment Appeal Trust – who wrote us a personal letter of thanks for our contribution to the refurbishment.
